I bought my EX3 back in March 2009 and it quickly become the most requested filming format, gradually replacing the requests that I was getting for DVCAM and Digi Beta.  So why doesn’t my camera look like the standard EX3?  Well, I replaced the standard lens on mine to a Fujinon HD broadcast one which takes the picture sharpness and depth of the camera to a different level.  I have used this camera in many different environments over the past year or so and each time it has produced fantastic results.

When I first started in this business in 1996, the amount and weight of camera equipment used for a shoot was colossal.  It has gradually reduced over the years with the advent of Lithium Ion batteries and lighter cameras, but the EX3 now takes this a large step forward.  It allows me to work without the need for a camera assistant and yet the picture quality that it gives is stunning.  No wonder then that this camera is given Silver Status for programme making with National Geographic HD Channel.  Also, an increasing number of programmes for BBC / ITV / C4 / C5 are made on this camera.

I have been working on broadcast cameras for 14 years, building up a wealth of experience covering a wide range of subjects on many different locations.  Any extra requirements like autocue (as in the photos) are easily met, with my standard equipment comprising of the following:

Sony PMW-EX3 with Fujinon HD broadcast lens
6x Sony SxS Cards (32g, 16Gb and 8Gb) (I don’t use the cheaper adapters)
Sachtler Tripod with carbon fibre legs
2x Sennheiser Radio microphone kits
Sachtler Reporterlight kit / Red Head kit / Soft light kit
Greenscreen / Bluescreen / Whitescreen
HD 9 inch Monitor - battery or mains
Plenty of spares and other bits and pieces
