Being able to edit on location straight after filming has become an increasingly popular request. Up until now, I have packed up the main edit-suite and brought everything along - needing quite a large area to work. I have been waiting for Apple to bring out their latest generation of MacBook Pro laptops for some time ...... and recently the time arrived.
My model is the 17 Inch, Intel Core i7 2.66 Ghz version - this is running Final Cut Studio 3 along with all the other applications on my main Mac Pro system. I have been astounded by the speed and easy workflow, especially when working with the Sony EX3.
As this is a self-contained laptop edit suite, it all fits into a small laptop bag, so is easily transportable. It also means that I can edit pretty much anywhere with minimal setup time and output to any required formats, (HD and SD) including burning DVDs.
One of the real benefits of this system is the ability to be able to start an edit and review rushes when away on location for a few days. The system is easily set up in a hotel room or office location (anywhere in fact!) so that rushes can be backed up, checked, logged and/or edited. This saves time in the final edit, plus has the benefit of the day’s shoot being fresh in the mind.
Also, the nature of filming means there is often down-time during a shoot for one reason or another. Being able to use this time to make a start on the edit makes a lot of sense and is cost-effective.
The workflow with the Sony EX3 is excellent. The SxS card from the camera can be inserted straight into the slot on the side of the MacBook Pro. The transfer of an hour’s worth of rushes takes 5 mins, so I can be editing very shortly after filming is completed. No need to wait for real-time ‘Play-in’. After editing, I can encode, down-convert and/or transfer to DVD right there and then. I can also bring a DVCAM deck for playout to tape.
